Bear's Party

In my last post I mentioned and showed some working process for a picture I started. I've finished that picture (Bear's Party) and thought I'd put the final on here and put all those pictures together.

I use traditional methods of working and my preferred is pen and ink. I also use some pencils to add detail.

Here's how the picture developed:

First this piece began as a sketch in my sketchbook

Which made it onto layout paper with different elements over three sheets. Then onto the lightbox to create one picture

As I said in my last post I do like a good colour swatch!

On to colouring in!

Detail of leaves - an oak tree

A silver birch and the oak again. This process of painting each leaf did take a long time but I was pleased with the outcome.

The final dry, flattened and scanned piece

I'm hoping to put some prints of this in my shop soon!

Badger, Badger, Badger... No mushroom

I've been busy completing a commission for a family portrait which has been lots of fun. I will be able to share it soon once it's been given as a present!

It was lovely to hand over the finished work as the person who commissioned it was over the moon. Always a good feeling!

I'm currently working on some prints for my shop but in the meantime here's some sketches and sneak peaks!

I may have been watching the Brothers Grimm film again. I do love it!

I shall be working on a pirate picture once I finish the current piece.

These littl firey chaps turned up in my sketchbook. As did a few squirrels!

A cheeky fairy

This piece came about while watching the Brothers Grimm. The pose of the bear was inspired by one of the character in the film.

I liked the sketch so much I've decided to make it into a larger piece and here it is on my lightbox.

I do like a good colour swatch!

Here's a peak at the inked up bear:

Here's a peak at the badger!

After drawing the badger I was reminded of the Badger, Badger, Badger, Mushroom song (by Weebl - I'm sure you can find it on YouTube as I did) which I then showed to Chickpea who thinks it's hilarious.

Thanks for stopping by.

Website and Fairies and World Book Day, Oh My!

Hello and thanks for visiting my blog!

My website has had an update:
http://www.terismyth.com/ there are a few new pictures on there as well as a link to my Etsy shop. I intend to add some more products soon.

Meanwhile as I'm working on a private commission here are some pictures from my sketchbook and some other things too:

In a break I drew this evil little fairy called Yallery Brown. Most definitely not to be trusted!

Chickpea has been itching to get her hands on my inks and brushes and everything she can reach/see. I keep some of my older brushes for her and my dipper pen nibs too. I do think giving kids the chance to use high quality products really can inspire them.
In case you couldn't work it out she's painting her version of the princess and the pea.

As most parents will know it was World Book Day and this means kids dressing up as their favourite book character for school. It's such a great opportunity to get children discussing their favourite books.

Chickpea chose to go as Claude from the series of Claude books by Alex T Smith (they are very fabulously funny) and you can follow him on Twitter @Alex_T_Smith too.

Chickpea even had a juicy bone baguette hidden under her/Claude's hat!
I know the children in Chickpea's school had a fabulous day and some of the costumes were just amazing. There was even an Oberlix with a giant rock on his back!

Here are some bees not from my sketchbook but from my drawing board instead.

Also a sketch of Chickpea.

Finally Sarah McIntyre has been campaigning, in the most pleasant way,  to make sure illustrators are given credit for creating picture books too. It seems mostly to be down to old systems and ways of working. There has been a positive response from the industry. You can read more about it on Sarah's blog here:

And you can follow her on Twitter here @Jabberworks and click on or search for the #PicturesMeanBusiness hashtag.

Time Flies!

Well the last month or so has flown by and I've slightly neglected my blog. I have been busy. There's been snow and fun and Valentine's Day, as well as lots of other things in between.

Here's a sample of what I've been working on (there is some colour too so keep scrolling)!

From my sketchbook a couple of lovebirds

There were a lot of chilly illustrators in January

A Daily Doodle for the letter P (check out @Daily__Doodle over on Twitter)

From my sketchbook - I can't imagine who this is (Chickpea)

For #nonidentikit over on Twitter started by Sarah McIntyre (@Jabberworks)

I have been experimenting a bit more with the way I paint and really liked this lady who is part of a bigger picture

I drew a lot of old men for the same picture

And plenty pugs too

Number 50 was my favourite

Here's a photo (taken on my dodgy phone camera) of the finished piece. I still have to scan this and put it on my website

There was 24hr comic day on the 1st Feb which I managed the first 3 hours and then got way too busy!

This little fellow turned up in my sketchbook

As did a party slug

And some non-party newts

A whole cacophony of cats

Mini Monsters

There may have been new pens and more monsters

Finally there was Valentine's Day. I painted a picture for my husband. Here's a bit of the detail

The finished piece

Thanks for taking time to read my blog and well done for making it all the way down here!
